So your cruise ship is planning a stop in Roatan, Honduras. What can you do there? The real question is, what CAN’T you do there? I had no expectations of this small island when I arrived. What I found was a very lush, beautiful, friendly, and adventurous place that I did not want to leave.
I was on Roatan for the day and chose to spend it with Rony of Rony’s Tours. I was traveling with my family so it was my sister and I and our four kids ranging in age from 8 to 15. Rony escorted us to his comfortable air conditioned van and we began our adventure for the day. Our tour was completely customizable and Rony gave us many options to choose from.
We wanted to experience what it was like to live in Roatan so our first stop was in Rony’s own hometown. There Rony shared with us what life was like. We sampled the local beverage and handed out candy to the children in the village.
Our next stop was the Sandy Bay Lighthouse orphanage. It was such a joy to meet the children at the orphanage. Our kids played jump rope and other games with the children. We were able to tour their establishment including the kitchen, living areas, and school where the children learned in both English and Spanish. Their smiles stole our hearts!
After these two stops, we were already in love with the people of Roatan.
Next we were ready for some adrenaline pumping adventure. So, we headed over to Bodden Tours Mayan Jungle Canopy. One of the things that I really loved about Rony’s tour is that he knew where to go to avoid the cruise ship crowd. Because of that, I felt like we had this place to ourselves! This zip line adventure had 14 runs and it was fantastic. The kids couldn’t get enough and loved every minute of it. After we ziplined, we got to interact with the monkeys, birds, and other animals they had on site.
Rony continued to drive us around the island. He gave historical information in addition to pointing out important landmarks. For lunch, Rony took us to a restaurant that was right on the water. It was a beautiful place to enjoy some local cuisine.
After lunch, we walked a few minutes to a snorkel spot. Again, absolutely no crowds and I felt like we had it all to ourselves. We were able to rent snorkel equipment and had some chairs to relax in. It was not on a beach, but the view was still beautiful. We took stairs down into the calm and clear water. The kids were amazed at all the fish we saw.
This concluded our amazing day in Roatan. We could not have asked for a better time and felt we really got a wonderful sample of the people and culture of Roatan. Rony took us back to the ship and we sadly said goodbye. If you are in Roatan and would like to have Rony customize your day, contact Bliss Travel Service for more information.
